This machine uses a Mason jar to hold a solution of water and alcohol that is meant to act as a reference for the machine to check itself. Its not uncommon that solution is improperly mixed resulting in a inaccurate result. Additionally, the temperature of the solution is critical, thats why their is a thermometer hanging in the jar. Most times the operator of the machine fails to read the temperature in the solution prior to the test being performed! This type of error can prevent the State from using the results in Court!
Pressure Switch or Pressure Sensor
This machine will not function unless it can implement the principles of Henry’s Gas Law. A known temperature and pressure are critical to its operation. The manufacturer designed this machine for use with a pressure sensor that would dynamically measure the pressure in the test chamber during the testing cycle. Instead of purchasing the machine as designed, the State of Texas wanted a cheaper model and demanded that a pressure switch be used instead. The pressure switch starts the testing cycle when a certain pressure is reached, but the computer cannot then measure and take into account any changes in pressure during the testing cycle. How many people do you know that can blow at a constant pressure?? Henry’s Law, the machine’s design principle and it’s Achilles’ Heel !

Intoxilyzer 9000
Intoxilyzer 9000 is the latest purchase for the State of Texas. It uses the same infared technology as the below listed Intox 5000, with the same technological issues. The manufacturer, CMI, as with the 5000 has not/will not release the software code for peer reviewed examination. The infared photo spectrometry that the machines use to detect alcohol in the human body is not specific for the alcohol that we drink, producing false positive results.
